Your Questions Answered

Find answers to common questions about therapy services, insurance coverage, scheduling, and what to expect from your sessions at Paper Crane Wellness.

Insurance & Payment

Do you take insurance?

Yes! I take insurance because I believe mental health care should be within reach. Paper Crane Wellness is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum/UHC, Cigna, Aetna, and Tricare East.

Private pay is available at $150 per hour and a superbill can be provided for potential reimbursement with insurance companies that have out of network benefits.

How do I verify my insurance benefits?

You can verify your benefits by calling the member services number on your insurance card. Ask about:

  • Mental health/behavioral health coverage
  • Number of authorized sessions per year
  • Copayment or coinsurance amount
  • Whether pre-authorization is required

I'm also happy to help you navigate this process during our consultation.

What if my insurance isn't listed?

If your insurance provider isn't in our network, you can still access services through private pay or out-of-network benefits. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network coverage that can reimburse a significant portion of therapy costs.

I can provide a superbill (detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Getting Started

How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. This gives us a chance to see if we're a good fit for each other and allows you to ask any questions you might have about the therapeutic process.

You can schedule this consultation by clicking the "Book a Free 15 Minute Consultation" button on any page of our website, or by calling us directly at 843-256-2016.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

In most cases, you don't need a referral to start therapy. However, some insurance plans may require a referral or pre-authorization. It's best to check with your insurance provider to understand their specific requirements.

If you're unsure, I can help you navigate this during our consultation.

What comes next?

What happens during the intake session?

Your intake session is primarily about getting to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and what you hope to achieve. We'll work together to identify your symptoms and explore potential diagnoses to ensure we develop the most effective treatment approach for your specific needs.

We'll also review important paperwork, including confidentiality policies and treatment planning information.

Therapy Process

How often are therapy sessions?

Typically, therapy sessions are held weekly, especially in the beginning. This consistency helps build momentum and provides regular support as you work toward your goals.

As you progress, we may discuss adjusting frequency to bi-weekly or monthly sessions, depending on your needs and progress.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals, needs, and circumstances. Some people find relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.

We'll regularly review your progress and adjust our treatment plan accordingly. There's no set timeline - therapy ends when you feel you've achieved your goals and have the tools to maintain your progress independently.

What types of therapy do you offer?

I offer several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for trauma processing
  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD and anxiety
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for mindfulness-based change
  • Trauma-Informed Yoga for embodied healing
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy for trauma recovery

I'll recommend the approach that best fits your specific needs and goals.

Practical Details

Do you offer virtual therapy?

Yes! I offer virtual therapy anywhere in South Carolina. This allows you to attend sessions from the comfort of your home or any private space where you feel safe and comfortable.

I also offer in-person therapy at my Mount Pleasant office if you prefer face-to-face sessions.

What's your cancellation policy?

I require at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to the full session fee, as this time was reserved specifically for you.

I understand that life happens, so if you need to reschedule, please contact me as soon as possible so we can find another time that works for both of us.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is completely confidential. Everything you discuss in session is protected by professional ethics and state laws, with very few exceptions (such as imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or abuse of a child or vulnerable adult).

I'll explain the specific limits of confidentiality during our first session so you have a complete understanding of your privacy rights.
